Cumberland County Board of Education

Board Meeting Actions March 10, 2010

The Cumberland County Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the Cumberland County High School Library.

During the meeting, the board:

¨      Heard presentations from CCHS students Kalyn Barnett, Kari Proffitt, Jerrod Turner, Kaitlyn Struthers, Courtney Black, Gabe Smith and Audra Page.  The demonstrations, with the theme of “Learning by Doing”, showcased the use of technology, engineering, and hands-on experience from Culinary Skills, Technical Design and Applications, Art, World Civilization, and Anatomy and Physiology classes.

¨      Received a report from Superintendent John Hurt about the asbestos management review that was recently completed in the district.  No violations were cited and Department for Environmental Protection inspectors were very complimentary of all records and facilities.  Mr. Hurt discussed with the Board several bills in the 2010 Kentucky General Assembly that could affect education.  Major cuts to some programs are expected to affect funding and other bills addressing the compulsory age of attendance, early graduation and principal selection would have an impact on education if passed.  Mr. Hurt reported that Kentucky is one of the 16 finalists for the federal Race to the Top grant which has been fiercely competitive among the 41 states applying.  Kentucky will now vie for one of the first round grants of which only 4 or 5 are expected to be awarded.  Superintendent Hurt also reported that the district’s technology plan has been finalized and interactive technology boards will be placed in every classroom in the district.  He expects this technology will have an immediate impact on student achievement that will result in long term benefits for the children of Cumberland County.  The goal is to have all classrooms installed by the beginning of next school year.

¨       Heard the Discipline Committee report from Priscilla Schwartz.

¨      Heard a report from CCHS principal Kay Graham-Bright about the results from the state Jr. Beta convention and the Regional Governor’s Cup competition.  Instruction and assessment events at CCHS included mid-term conferences, Formative Assessment team site visits, and ACT testing.  CCMS principal Glen Murphy also reported results from the state Jr. Beta convention with several winners at the middle school level.  CCMS upcoming events include the Reality Store scheduled for later in the month and the beginning of spring sports.  CCES principal Rodney Schwartz gave the Board a report about the CCES Academic team competition in the District Governor’s Cup last month.  CCES has several students who will move on to Regional competition later in March.  Upcoming events at CCES include the “Kids on the Block”, Lexington Children’s Theater, and the Spelling Bee.  Mr. Schwartz also gave the Board a report on the CCES 21st Century Learning program.  All principals discussed safety drills, nine-week testing, and plans for an Open House.
